Delayed Quick Hits

Very busy the last couple of weeks, but here's the things that have caught my attention over that time span:

  • Courtesy at the grocery store: Saturday morning, Erin wanted pancakes, but we didn't have enough Bisquick.  Went to the store, picked up what I needed, and proceeded to stand in line to check out.  Every single line had people with a full cart.  I chose the one with only one person in line beyond the person currently being checked out.  As I get behind her, the lady in front of me proceeds to let me go in front of her.  I was perfectly willing to wait, but she pretty much insisted that I go, since I only had the one item.  It's pretty rare nowadays to get this kind of reaction from someone, so I am absolutely floored when it happens.  Floored, but also quite happy to see that there is still some good in humanity.
  • "Express" lanes: While driving to Illinois for the second time in a two week span, I made sure to avoid the "express" lanes that they have set up on the tollway during the tollway widening and rebuild that is currently going on.  Last time, I made the mistake of being in the express lane for one stretch of road, and I got stuck behind a car that felt they should be in the express lane, even though they drive under the speed limit.  I probably shaved 20 minutes off of my trip by using the "local" lanes, even though I was going straight through the entire stretch of construction.
  • Ultimate:  Getting hit in the eye with a disc while warming up for Ultimate really, really hurts.
  • Killing Monsters by Gerard Jones is an excellent book. I'll go into more detail on it once I'm finished with it.
  • Roombas are very cool, and I'm very happy that ours is used nightly to clean up after the birds.  It doesn't get as deep into the carpet as our Dyson vaccuum cleaner, but it does the job on all of that food the birds throw out of their cages onto the ground.
  • Seat Belts:  While on our way home from Ultimate one night, a police car was in the other lane, just behind us.  The car in front of me was going pretty slowly, so I was wondering why the officer was going the same speed, rather than going faster to get around that car, since I wanted to get around the other car as well.  Then he turned on his big flood light, and pointed it at our car.  After a second or two, he turned it off, passed us, and did the same thing to the car in front of me.  Apparently, he was driving around checking people's seat belts.  I'm not completely sure how I feel about that, but it doesn't really affect me since I always wear my seat belt.  I know some people would complain that the government doesn't have the right to regulate those things, but the fact is that it is regulated, so deal with it.
