Work Without a Manager

Friday was my manager's last day at the company.  Tomorrow he'll be at his new job.  It's kind of weird, the idea of working without a manager there at all.  We are all now reporting directly to his boss, but he's based in New York.  We've still got our project manager, and the business unit management is all still there as well, but it just seems strange.  They're looking for a new manager, but until then, our team is kind of on our own.  I'm not sure how well this is going to work out.  I've never really needed a manager on a day-to-day basis personally; I just do anything and everything that I need to get done.  I've always felt that the best managers are the ones that let you just do your work and have a "just come see me if you need me, otherwise I'll leave you alone attitude".  In fact, for the most part at my last job, I didn't really have a manager anyways, but I knew that there was someone there if I needed them.

But at the same time, I know that there are people out there that want and need that additional direction that a manager provides.  It is always nice to have someone there to make sure that you aren't getting overloaded with work from all sides, and also to give you the go ahead on non-strategic, yet vital projects, like implementing a new source control system, or rewriting some massively outdated libraries.  I guess for the time being, we will just have to work as a team to make those decisions, at least the smaller scale ones.  Who knows, maybe this will actually work out really well.
