The Joys of Owning a Home

We've been in our house for over five years now, and every time I turn around, there are more things that previous owners did that amaze me.  We bought a new wall-mounted sink for one of our bathrooms (so my wife can have this Pooh Faucet), and when I went to take out the old one, I found the following problems:

  • The pipe for the drain was welded to the drain itself, meaning I could not disconnect the two, and now need to buy some new pipes as well.
  • The wall mount used was screwed into the wall with three different sized screws, all jutting out at odd angles.  In addition, they had somehow put a couple of metal brackets into the wall so bolts could be used to fasten the mount even further.
  • Some sort of industrial strength glue was used in addition to the screws and bolts to attach the wall mount.  I had to pry the thing off, which took most of the paper part of the drywall with it.

Oh, and also, this bathroom was added on long after the house was built by cutting a hole in the dining room wall, above the stairwell to the basement, and putting up drywall without any real studs for support, which is probably why such drastic measures were taken to support the sink.

So now, I've got to replace a large piece of drywall, paint over the patch, buy new pipes for the sink, somehow attach the new wall mounting brackets at the correct height, and then I can finally install the new sink.  Considering some of the other things I've seen in this house over the years, I guess it shouldn't surprise me, but sometimes it still does.
