Grammar & Spelling Online

One thing that has always bugged me about blogs is the relative lack of proofreading and editing of online writings.  In my opinion, all this really does is make the writer seem ignorant and stupid.  In print media, everything is read by at least one other person before it is published.  Of course, online media is so much more pervasive and has so many more writers, this is pretty much impossible.  However, there is nothing stopping a person from re-reading something themselves before they post it, and there is nothing preventing the use of a spell-checker either.  Most blogging applications even have built in spell-checkers for this now.  Granted, spell-checkers can't catch everything, and can also have false positives, depending on how advanced the spell-checker is and how big its dictionary is, but a spell-checker always a good starting point.  I am a little bit more forgiving with grammatical errors, depending on the source, but spelling is incredibly easy to check out.

I'm not saying that blogs are the only offenders of issues like this.  Online magazines and other online-only media outlets are nearly as bad.  In many respects, they are actually much worse, because these websites are trying to make themselves out to be respectable sources of information.  Online versions of print and television media have been known to have this problem as well.  I actually remember one time where I saw an article summary on CNN.com's homepage with a glaring spelling mistake right in the middle of the top story.  To me, this is completely inexcusable.  CNN is a huge media conglomerate, and I'm sure that they have more than enough editors for their articles.  They should definitely have enough editors to review the articles that are going to end up on the front page, especially the top story.  This was also a spelling error that any spell-checker would have immediately found.

Now, of course, since I've written this, I am bound to have a massive and obvious spelling error in an upcoming post, and will most definitely be chastised for it mercilessly.
